Railway Equipment (cars)
Railroads classify cars by mechanical designations that appears in the Official Railway Equipment Register. This classification began in 1910. It has gone through a number of revisions through the years.
Each of the car types have multiple subclassifications. For this study, we will identify the major types as recognized by the American Associations of Railroads. The links below in the chart will connect you to infomation about that type of car.
